你以為的 budget，其實根本不叫 budget

在職場上，你可能這樣寫英文報告：
“The team spent the budget last week.”
或在會議中對老闆說：
“We used up our budget.”
文法沒錯，句子也通順，但真正用英文工作的人，會聽出一絲不對勁。
因為英文裡的 budget，不是這樣用的。

Budget 不是錢，是「規劃中的錢」
中文把 budget 翻成「預算」，很容易讓人以為它就是一筆可以花的錢。但英文裡的 budget，更接近「限額」或「編列計畫」。
它不是放在你手上的現金（cash），而是你允許自己花到哪裡的上限。
英文母語者會說：
“Budget is not something you spend.
It’s something you manage.”

所以你不會說：
（Ｘ） “We have already used up our budget.”
而應該說：
（Ｏ） “We’ve already spent the allocated amount.”
（Ｏ） “We’re reaching the budgeted limit.”

Budget 是「控管參數」，不是「可以花的錢」
中文裡說「老闆給我預算」、「客戶增加預算」，聽起來再自然不過，但英文不要照翻。
來看看一些常見的錯搭動詞：
（Ｘ） “use the budget”
（Ｘ） “get a budget from the client”
（Ｘ） “add it to the budget”

英文裡，正確的動詞應該是：
（Ｏ） manage the budget（控管）
（Ｏ） allocate a budget（分配）
（Ｏ） budget for …（編列在預算內）
（Ｏ） reforecast the budget（重新預估）

你可以把 budget 想成一個管理指標，像 KPI 或配額（quota）：它不是「現在手上有多少錢」，而是「你怎麼規劃這筆錢的使用方式」。

以下三種「你以為的 budget」，其實不叫 budget
1. 「可花的錢」≠ budget → 應該說 funds / available amount
如果你想表達「我們現在可以用的錢」，更自然的說法是：
（Ｏ） “We have $10K in available funds.”
（Ｏ） “There’s still budgeted capacity for the event.”
＊Budget 是整體規劃，不是眼前可動用的金額。

2. 「老闆給我預算」≠ give budget → 應該說 approve / allocate
（Ｘ） “My manager gave me a budget.”
（Ｏ） “My manager approved a $5K budget.”
（Ｏ） “We were allocated $8K for travel expenses.”
＊Budget 是被核准的，英文裡不會說是「給你錢」。

3. 「把錢編入預算」≠ add to budget → 應該說 budget for + 名詞
（Ｘ） “We need to add that cost to the budget.”
（Ｏ） “We need to budget for potential overruns.”
（Ｏ） “We didn’t budget for the extra printing costs.”

＊Budget 當動詞時，表示「提前規劃進去」。

學英文，其實是在學「怎麼看事情」。下次在寫報告或簡報時，不妨問自己：
你講的「預算」，是指控管上限？還是手上現金？
你用的動詞，是 manage、allocate？還是誤用了 use、spend？
你理解的 budget，是一份規劃書？還是一筆可以拿來花的錢？

學英文，不只是查出中文意思，而是學會：
這個字，在英文裡到底「怎麼被看待、怎麼被使用」？
抓對英文的語境，表達就更自然、說服力更強。

choice, option 都是「選擇」，哪裡不一樣？

choice、option、selection、pick、alternative都是選擇，但它們的意思和用法有些不同，今天來看看各種不同的「選擇」。

1. Our choosing process is open and fair. 我們的選拔過程是公開且公正的。

2. You made good option. 你做了對的選擇。

3. The doctor says there are no better selection to the current treatment.

醫生說，沒有比當前的治療方法更好的選擇了。

4. Can you help me to select a color for my prom dress? 你可以幫我挑選舞會禮服的顏色嗎？

5. Lisa has been choiced as the new production manager by the firm’s directors.

Lisa被公司董事選為新任生產部門經理。
