中英文慣用語其實很像？

英文裡不少慣用語跟中文平時常用的俗語、口語說法有異曲同工之妙，甚至就像是從中文直接翻譯過來一樣。然而，即便如此，有些小細節仍要注意。

1. All of us think that John gets big-headed disease. 我們全都認為John患了大頭症。
   
   
2. You can do whatever you want. I won’t stand on your way. 你想做什麼都隨你，我不會擋你的路。
   
   
3. Joe followed his father’s footsteps and started his own business. Joe跟隨他父親的腳步創業。
   
   
4. I’ll find her even if she runs to the end of the earth. 就算她跑到天涯海角，我也會找到她。
   
   
5. Unity is the strength. 團結就是力量。

Debug Answer

1. All of us think that John gets big-headed.
   「患了大頭症」表示人因為升遷或佔了其他優勢而變得自命不凡，英文也有相近用語：get big-headed，只不過英文不用加「病」disease。
   
   
2. You can do whatever you want. I won’t stand in your way.
   「擋某人的路」是指妨礙某人從事他想做的事，英文可用stand in one’s way，注意介系詞是in而非on，on one’s way是「前往…的途中」，in one’s way才是「妨礙、阻撓」。
   
   
3. Joe followed in his father’s footsteps and started his own business.
   follow in someone’s footsteps就是「跟隨某人的腳步」，表示效法某人做他曾做過的事。follow本身可以當及物動詞，但此慣用語是模仿他人的腳步、用他人的腳步前進，所以加介系詞in。
   
   
4. I’ll find her even if she runs to the ends of the earth.
   「天涯海角」相當於世界的盡頭，所以有the ends of the earth這樣的說法。「盡頭」有很多，所以要用複數形ends。
   
   
5. Unity is strength.
   「團結就是力量」的英文即為Unity is strength.或Strength is in unity.，unity和strength都是集合名詞，前面不加冠詞。
