這些字意思相似，但可千萬別拿來替換

你知道嗎？join和attend都可以表示「參加」，但意思上有差別，不能互相替換。英文中像這樣的單字組不勝枚舉，請見以下五個例句：

1. He will join the seminar to be held in Kaohsiung. 他會出席辦在高雄的專題研討會。
2. My mother put a scarf above my head. 媽媽把一條圍巾蓋在我的頭上。
3. Do you think the color of the lipstick matches me? 你覺得這口紅的顏色配我嗎？
4. I have read a great deal of English novels. 我看過很多英文小說。
5. She drove slowly if someone suddenly stepped in front of her car. 她放慢車速，以防有人忽然插到她的車子前面。

Debug Answer

1. He will attend the seminar to be held in Kaohsiung.
   attend是指「參加、出席」一項活動，譬如會議、教堂禮拜等等，join則是指參加某個團體或組織，如：join a health club（加入健康俱樂部）、join the Army（從軍）。
   
   
2. My mother put a scarf over my head.
   above和over都可以表示「在…上方」，例如時鐘上方的燈，the light above/over the clock，用above或over皆可，但要表示某物覆蓋在另一物品上，就只能用over。
   
   
3. Do you think the color of the lipstick suits me?
   表達一個東西和另一個東西很搭配，用match，例：The blue shirt matches my gray tie.（藍襯衫很配我的灰領帶。）指某人的妝容顏色或飾件造型和此人很相配，則是用suit。
   
   
4. I have read a lot of English novels.
   a lot of和a great deal of都是「很多、大量的」，但前者可以接可數或不可數名詞，後者只能修飾不可數名詞。
   
   
5. She drove slowly in case someone suddenly stepped in front of her car.
   if用在表示「條件」的情況下，解釋為「如果、假使」；in case才可用來談論預防措施，相當於「以防、免得」。
