學習英文的歷程中，幾乎沒有人不背片語，而片語的困難度在於：即使意思相去十萬八千里，字面上卻可能極為相似，也因此容易誤用。以下五個即是誤用片語的例句：

1. It’s quite difficult to clean up the stain on the shirt. 要除掉襯衫上的污漬是相當困難的。
2. The anesthesia wore out about an hour after surgery. 手術後約一小時，麻醉漸漸退了。
3. John’s family is better off. 約翰家境富裕。
4. Owe to our joint efforts, the task was fulfilled smoothly. 由於我們共同的努力，任務順利完成了。
5. Don’t work yourself out. I’m not sure yet if you got a promotion. 別興奮，我還不確定你是否獲得升遷。

Debug Answer

1. It’s quite difficult to clean off the stain on the shirt.
   clean up是將一個地方整個清理乾淨，例：My mother is cleaning up the kitchen now.（我媽媽現在正在清理廚房。）clean off則是將附在東西上的髒污除去。
   
   
2. The anesthesia wore off about an hour after surgery.
   wear out是「用壞、穿破、耗盡」之意，someone’s worn out是指某人的精力被耗盡，也就是很累的意思。wear off是表示「逐漸消失」。
   
   
3. John’s family is well off.
   原句若不改，意思是「約翰家情況好轉」，因為better off是「景況轉好、更有餘裕」的意思。well off才是「富裕」。
   
   
4. Owing to our joint efforts, the task was fulfilled smoothly.
   owe to是動詞片語，意指「歸功於、應感謝」，「將某事歸功於某人或某事」句型為owe something to someone/something；owing to是介系詞片語，表示「因為、由於」。
   
   
5. Don’t work yourself up. I’m not sure yet if you got a promotion.
   work up解釋為「使…激動」，而「激動」有可能是興奮、也可能是生氣，因此需要考慮前後文。原句中的work out有「發展、解決、（運動）鍛鍊」等多重意思。
