商業人士開會，經常要「確認」會議時間；出差要「確認」行程，我們的學生也經常打電話來要「確認」今天有沒有課。
訂房、訂位、會議安排，生活裡要確認的項目多得不得了，有位讀者寫信來問，"confirm"和"make sure"都是「確認」，哪個情況要用哪個字才對？
「確認」的兩種用法：confirm和make sure中文意思差在哪？
「Confirm」中文意思是什麼？
先來看定義上的不同， "confirm"要確認「一件事的正確性」，"make sure"要確認的是「一個動作會發生」。
我們會檢查流程，確保事情順利進行。
（X）We'll check the agenda to confirm that everything runs smoothly.
（O）We'll check the agenda to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
要確認的是"everything runs smoothly"這個動作會發生，用"make sure"。
主管想確認Janice下週是否不在辦公室。
（X）The director wants to make sure if Janice will be out of the office next week.
（O）The director wants to confirm if Janice will be out of the office next week.
主管要確認的是「Janice不在辦公室」這個消息是真的，而不是要確保她不會在辦公室，用confirm。
什麼時候該用「make sure」？
再來是文法上的差異，make sure既然是確保一件事會發生，它後面接的是一個子句，而confirm的彈性就大一點，可以接子句，也可以接名詞。

I'd like to confirm my reservation at the hotel.
I'd like to make sure (that) you have my reservation.
這兩種說法都可以，不過用"make sure"語氣略微隨意一些。
