中文的「聽」，想起來很簡單，經常搞混的有hear和listen to。Listen to和hear都是「聽」的意思。Listen to強調「聽」的動作，hear強調「聽」的結果，應該說成「聽到」。
第一句是指仔細聆聽，第二句，只聽到鳥叫聲但不知道鳥在哪裡，因此用 hear。
更多例子如下：
1. I listened, but heard nothing.
我聽了，但什麼也聽不見。
2. Listen to me, please! I'm going to give you an update on the project.
請聽我說！我要告訴你專案最新狀況。
3. It's too noisy here. I can't hear you.
這裡太吵，我聽不見你說話。
常聽這類的錯誤：
別聽他們說的，沒這回事。X Don't listen to what they said. Nothing of the sort.
O Don't believe them. Nothing of the sort.
中文雖然講「聽」，英文卻不能用 listen to，因為listen to指「聽」的動作，但你真正的意思是「別聽」，不是不讓他「聽」，而是勸告他「不要聽信」。
1. I heard the company is downsizing.
我聽說那家公司在縮編中。
2. 我想加強英文的聽力。
X I'd like to improve my hearing ability.
O I'd like to improve my listening comprehension.
3. 這裡的「聽力」，一定是專心聽之下，能不能理解的能力；如果耳朵聽不到聲音，聽力有問題，才會說：
I have a hearing problem. ■
